I know this is kinda late but all these fashion spreads have finally brought me to speak about it...
Michael Jackson's death was of a shock to me. I woke up in the morning and flipped on the telly unknowingly. CNN was on and there were all these video clips of his concerts and some interviews. They showed the one where he said it was ok to share beds with children. I thought, "Gosh he's gotten weird" then after that, footage of people crying in the streets etc. and I was like "wooooaaaaah this can't be happening". It's the end of an era, folks.
When I was young, my school "The Learning Child" would hold all these mini-concert/programs where the kids would get on stage and sing or dance. I remember, for the ending song, the whole school (we weren't that many, less than 100 maybe) got on stage and sang "Heal the World". When you're a kid you really believe in the spirit of the song. I loved Michael's voice. It was just so kind and peaceful. Growing up, I liked his videos and music, "Remember the Time", "Black or White" (with Macauley Caulkin from Home Alone), "Scream"... So Michael Jackson for me represented my childhood.
He got very weird through the years with his many facial transformations and rumors of child molestation etc. that I chose not to listen to. His songs were in my ipod even though I didn't really understand their grandeur as hits. "Billie Jean", "Smooth Criminal", "The Way You Make Me Feel"... I had a whole medley / remix that was fun to dance to. It was only later that I realized how amazing a singer he was. I knew he was talented for dancing and being part of the Jackson 5. I enjoyed the disco versions of "I Want You Back" and downloaded the original version. My grandma watched them when they came to Manila in the 70s. She said as a kid he already had such a pristine voice.
My friend and I spent a whole day watching his MTV special, not to mention I stayed up late to watch his memorial and 30th anniversary special concert. I was sad to have realized only after his death how unique and rare he was. I'm glad though to have lived in his lifespan. I shed a tear when Paris, his daughter, spoke which proves that he really loved his children and viceversa. I think he was just really misunderstood by the media. He did not have a typical childhood which probably caused many of the insecurities and personal issues. It's sad how such a musical genius could be exploited and destroyed by the public. It's human nature wherein people only realize a person's place in their lives once they're gone. I read an article about his visit to the Philippines and how he genuinely wanted to give gifts to the poor. He stuck through the heat, signing autographs and taking pictures with everyone. I hope people could stop attacking him and exploiting him now that he's gone. The world took so much from this person and I wish he could see how much he's touched people's lives. He's not only a musical icon but a trendsetter as well. He truly deserves the title King of Pop. Michael Jackson, Rest in Peace
